URBAN INTELLIGENCE
URBAN INTELLIGENCE
This section describes how the 31 reviewed cities are working to solve various urban problems using the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies like the IoT, Big data, AI, XR (VR•AR, Digital twin, Metaverse), and blockchain. The report analysed at 1,489 app- and web-based services, 514 infrastructure services, and 1,088 specific smart city projects, assessing how many have been developed based on 4IR technologies.
41% of Smart City Developments Use 4IR Technology, Especially in the Health & Social Service and Crime & Disaster Prevention Sectors
Since 2019, the use of 4IR technologies in app- and web-based services, infrastructure services and smart city projects has increased from 28% to 41%. There is a tendency for cities to apply intelligent technologies in an extended or systematic manner. Analysis further showed that technologies related to IoT and big data accounted for 35% of developments, and innovative technologies like AI, blockchain and and VR accounted for 6%. AI accounts for 71%, the highest proportion, of these other technologies, showing cities accelerating their implementation of this new phase of technology during COVID-19.
Between 2019 and 2022, 72% of infrastructure services, 58% of smart city projects, and 18% of app- or web-based services made use of 4IR technologies to develop smart city. The percentage for app- or web-based sevices is roughly the same as in 2019, but the proportion of innovative technologies has increased slightly in the infrastructure and smart city project areas. The prospect of technological innovation through the convergence of intelligent technology promises a great degree of digital and green transformation. The social and economic quality of life in cities will continue to improve as cities are expected to implement even more AI in the next few years.
